400 cases in UBC Good Practice Database!

Since the launch of the UBC Good Practice Database in March 2009, visitors have found the database and new cases are coming in regularly. We have now reached 400 cases and more are still to be published. UBC Good Practice Database offers a good platform to look for inspiration and market your achievements. It offers more information than other platforms and therefore has been positively evaluated by users. If you have not yet inserted Good Practices from your city into the database - we warmly welcome you to do so by creating your own login name.

Call for stories - Baltic Cities Environmental Bulletin 1/2010

The next Environmental Bulletin is dedicated to the Sustainable Solutions Supporting Cities through challenging times. Articles describing solutions increasing the attractivity of the cities and building new opportunities for sustainability in local authorities are warmly welcomed and needed. Stories reflecting existing good practices, innovations, cooperation/partnership models enabling a sustainable Baltic Sea Region are appreciated from all Baltic cities and partner organisations.

Stories on your experiences, processes and lessons learnt will be invaluable for others to learn about. One of the most important intentions of the UBC network is to share good examples. In our 108 member cities there is a huge amount of good work being carried out. Let's promote this good work and make it visible and useful for others too!

The deadline for all stories is 31st March 2010.

The Joint Meeting of UBC Commissions on Energy, Environment and Transportation

It is our pleasure to invite you to the Joint Meeting of UBC Commissions on Energy, Environment and Transportation which will be held in Gdynia, Poland 17th – 19th March 2010.

The meeting will focus on Sustainable solutions for combating Climate Change in the Baltic Sea Region– implementing the UBC Sustainability Action Programme 2010-2015 and the EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region. The meeting is a joint meeting between three Commissions of UBC and we will tackle the challenges of Climate Change from these three angles. The meeting aims to come up with suggestions on how to implement the UBC Sustainability Action Programme and what roles and tasks we want to have in the implementation of the EU strategy for the Baltic Sea Region.

This meeting will offer an efficient networking and dissemination opportunity for the cities to exchange experiences, learn from each others, discuss and develop possible common project ideas and establish co-operation. Together we will find new ways of supporting and strengthen our UBC member cities as well as the whole Baltic Sea Region!

Opening conference of PURE -Project on Urban Reduction of Eutrophication

PURE –project kicks off its activities for a healthier Baltic Sea in Helsinki 9.-11.2.
The three-year project was approved for funding from the Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013 and was officially started at the end of year 2009.

During the coming years the PURE partners will plan and implement concrete investments that will reduce the phosphorous load to the Baltic Sea. Focus of the project is on improving the municipal waste water treatment processes. The Kick off in Helsinki will gather the 11 PURE partners together for the first time; introducing staff of cities and water companies from 8 central locations around the Baltic Sea to each other (Riga, Brest, Jurmala, Sczcecin, Kohtla-Järve, Gdansk, Luebeck and Mariehamn). The project is lead by UBC EnvCom together with John Nurminen Founda-tion and HELCOM.

The first day of the event is organised as a joint event with the Baltic Sea Challenge, under the title “Enhancing Nutrient Removal and Clean Shipping in the Cities of the Baltic Sea Region”. For more information about the Challenge-day click here
