The BaltCICA Project
Climate Change: Impacts, Costs and Adaptation in the Baltic Sea Region
The BaltCICA Project is designed to focus on the most imminent problems that climate change is likely to cause in the Baltic Sea Region. The concentration of large parts of the population and many larger cities in coastal areas make it especially sensitive to climate change. Changes in precipitation and flood patterns (river floods as well as storm surges) as well as sea level rise can be expected. This affects not only the built environment but also water availability and quality.
Aims of the project
- Assessment of climate change impacts on the living environment and territorial development.
- Testing and implementation of concrete adaptation measures in close cooperation between regions or municipalities.
- Assessment of the costs of rising sea levels and increased flood risks on a pan-Baltic level.
- Development of a process management concept on climate change adaptation and mitigation.
To achieve these goals the BaltCICA Project applies multi-level and trans-national approaches in the Baltic Sea Region. Evaluation and conceptualization of case study results support the work.
The project is lead by Geological Survey of Finland. UBC Commission on Environment carries out communication and dissemination activities in the project.
